Results of the Ten Non-Virtuous Actions

So I found one meditation that, one meditation to do with Medicine Buddha, to purify the disease what one already has and to protect oneself to not get. One very short meditation with the Medicine Buddha.

So I thought maybe translate this, very nice meditation, but very short. I thought maybe translate this and then can make available, because this is for both, to purify what one already has and also to protect, to not receive, to not get. Of course ultimate, whatever the meditation, other methods there are, but of course the ultimate one is one's own refuge, which is one's own mind, good heart, watching the mind, protecting the mind from the disturbing thoughts ultimately , there's no escape from that , that's the ultimate, what we have been talking the last few days, that is the ultimate one, meditation can help, those deity meditations can help, can receive blessings, but the main thing is our daily life practice, protecting the mind. Okay.

I think it's very auspicious to receive this picture today, some students sent from Sydney - it's very nice, very good. So I was thinking to write this meditation, then maybe when I go to see Ian Green, what's his name, Ian, maybe I can offer him the translation. Ian Gawler, yeah.

Something, at the moment is there any advice in the Western society that, from hospitals, how to protect, is there any advice like, other than when you have the disease, what diet and these, besides that, then before how to protect, huh? [Student: Yeah, safe sex] Safe sex depends on compassion! If the person has no compassion, then it's difficult, can't have safe sex . Again it comes back to compassion! No escape! No way to go round.

So, I think this part is very important, the subject that we, this part about karma or about the shortcomings of self-cherishing thought, to recognize the real enemy. It's the meditation on that, but actually it's also meditation on the karma, extensive way thinking, and effective way to think about cause and the non-virtuous action, the cause of suffering and the cause of happiness, going through the recognition of those, some basic examples.

Then, for example, you see, the possessed result, I thought it's important to go a little bit details, the possessed result of the killing, killing which become negative action because done out of self-cherishing thought [pause], that even when one is born as human being, then that time the place where one live, the food and drink, medicine, crops, fruit, so forth, they don't have much protein, very low protein, they generated very small protein, then, and they become difficult to digest and they cause disease. Even though they are supposed to be for means of living, but actually because of the past actions, such as non-virtuous action of killing, these things are obtained there for means of living, they become even obstacle for life, they cause disease. So the conditions even they are arranged for long life, they become conditions for short life, even still one has cause, merit to live longer but because of these conditions met untimely death. So things like that.

Then, out of self-cherishing thought, then the disturbing thoughts, those three poisonous, the action of stealing that is done out of self-cherishing thought, then this, one of the poisonous minds, so there are three poisonous minds, one of the poisonous minds, then that makes the stealing non-virtue. So the complete action of stealing has four suffering results. That is ripened aspect result in the lower realms. And then the, experiencing the result similar to the cause, then that one is, even one is born, when one is born in the human realm, then, one get born poverty, poor, not having means of living or very small, having shortage of means of living. Then, even one has some possessions but one has to share with others, you don't, it completely doesn't belong to you, you don't have full freedom to use, things like that.

Then, the place where one live or where one, then a lot of drought and no rain, lot of flood, even the crops they grew but eaten by worms or eaten by insects, so some people's field, some people's vegetables or field get eaten by worms, fruit, crops, so many worms; some doesn't happen, some less. So even in the same area, but depending on the different families' karma, the family, different owner's karma, even the field they grow in different way, they have, some have less obstacles, some have much obstacles. Even it grew but there's a lot of other insects or animals that are eating, so you don't get much. So all these are problems that are happening in the world, so they are the result of past action, past negative karma, stealing, that is done out of self-cherishing thought and attachment, so forth.

So then, then what happens is, experiencing the result, poverty and all these disasters, due to past negative karma of stealing, then again, rather changing, rather recognizing that it came from their own mind, from their own self-cherishing thought, attachment and so forth, rather recognizing that and changing, the way to develop the economic, the way to transform the environment, the way to develop the country is by, the real, the actual way to develop, to receive rains, to stop the drought, to grow the crops well, to have plenty of means of living, so the actual evolution, that has to come from their own mind, it has to come by changing the mind, from their positive attitude, the evolution has to come from there, come from their own mind, changing their attitude into positive. Only in this way then they can produce positive action, then through only positive action, such as living in the morality not stealing, being generous, giving to others, with a positive attitude, so only through this then they can be wealthy, this life and future lives, only through this then they have the cause, there's a possibility to create the cause and only through this then they can have the wealth, can develop the country, the family or the country, have better economic, easy living, plenty of enjoyment.

So, as long as they don't recognize this, they don't realize this, that it has to come from, by changing the mind, from the positive mind, all this has to come from their own positive mind, as long as they don't realize this, as long as they don't change their mind, as long as they don't change their action, then on top of this, continues still, because the result of the past negative action, all these hard lives, then again they steal more, again they do action of stealing and harming others, so in order to survive, in order to live, to have longer life, so which means, they think that they are doing, they are doing this in order to help themselves, but actually in reality they are creating the cause of the same problem again, so, the action, whether it's positive or negative action, the action is definite, means, so in teachings, the kind compassionate fully enlightened being explained the action is definite, "definite" means definite to bring its own result. So if it's a positive action, definite to bring its own result happiness; if it's negative action it's definite to bring it's own suffering result.

So as long as there's no obstacle then it's definite to bring its own result. For example, these negative karmas or there negative actions, that we have created in the past, so if we don't purify, if we don't do anything, if you don't purify by generating, by actualizing the path, the remedy of path in our mind, then purifying these negative actions, removing even the seed of these negative actions, even that unable to do, at least those, with mantras, with those powerful mantras, like such as the Vajrasattva, Thirty-five Buddhas, so there are different Buddhas manifested specially to purify the negative actions and, yeah, the cause of the problems, problems of this life, problems of life after this, such as the lower realms sufferings, those unfortunate realms sufferings, so the obstacles of the realizations, so there are many Buddhas whose manifestation is particularly to purify the negative actions. So even one is unable to generate the path in the mind, to remove the negative actions, the obscurations, but at least doing those different various practices, like such as visualizing deity, meditation of deity, reciting mantra, so there are many different practices that one can purify completely, before one start to experience the problem, the suffering, the obstacle, the disaster, that one can completely purify and make impossible to experience the result, the problems.

So, the action is definite, so the kind compassionate the omniscient one explained in the teachings, Guru Shakyamuni Buddha explained in the teachings that action is definite, means if there's no obstacle happened, then definite to bring its own result.

Then it's expandable, it's nature, for example, we plant one corn, but from one corn, can grow many, many corns, can grow hundreds of corns from one corn, so many corns. And then from each of those corns, by planting again can get many, many, then by planting back those can get so many, and by planting one tiny seed in the ground, one small seed under the ground, from this can get huge tree, tree trunk, then billions and billions of branches and leaves and fruit, seeds. So, but this is nothing, from one small seed how many results are coming, these external things, trees, like that, the result, there's so many results from one seed, but still that is nothing comparing the, how the action is expandable, the inner phenomena, those are external phenomena. Now the inner phenomena, the action or the karma, much more expandable than outside, so by doing one of these negative actions, one has to experience the result, by doing one karma, one of these negative karmas, one experience the result so many hundreds of lives, five hundreds of lives, one thousand lifetimes one has to experience the result, the problems. So, internal phenomena, the action is much more expandable than external phenomena, from one seed, how many seeds come.

So, then, so that's why even those countries like Ethiopia, now I have got it correct. Correct label, correct name. So Ethiopia, even somebody, even other countries they help to bring things, they bring machines they try to help to have better crops growing but there's something danger happens, some disaster happens and it doesn't work. For example, as I mentioned, that, even they try to bring water from other countries, but what happened it, it was okay as long as it was in other country but when, just the time when it came in their country, when it reached in their country, the water become bad. So it's like that.

You see, it has to come from their own mind. The enjoyment that which doesn't harm to their body, the enjoyment has to come from their own mind, and enjoyment that which doesn't harm them, healthy environment has to come from their own mind, from their positive mind. Even somebody tried to bring, it changes, it turned out bad.

So, you see, because of, the other times we are talking about impure mind, impure mind so impure appearances, ordinary impure mind, so, impure appearances. Now here we are talking even deeper, longer, deeper evolution, longer evolution, the past negative actions that which has left imprint on the mind, now, that negative imprint is manifested, so the water which is able to drink that it appeared bad water, so like that.

Then, like this, the possessed result of stealing. Then, creating the result similar to the cause, then when one is born as human being, doing the action of stealing again. Then again that complete action, then again one will have to experience four suffering results, so goes on like that. Goes on and on like this until the person changes the mind, transforms the mind and lives in the morality making vow to not steal, changing the attitude into positive and then living in the morality. Until that happens, the action goes on and on.

So when the person practices this meditation or this Dharma, transforming the mind into positive and transforming the action into positive, stop harming, stealing, living in this vow, then, something positive started. Then, that complete action living in the morality to not steal has four result happiness. We have to understand also the opposite, living in the vow, living in the morality to not steal, to not kill, to not sexual misconduct, to not steal, each of these complete actions has four result happiness: the body of the happy migratory being, one get born the body of the happy migratory being, deva, human body, instead of lower realms, body of the happy migratory being. Other one is body of the suffering migratory being. Then, creating the result, possessed result of killing, then we have, then that's easy, once we have done the opposite, it's easy to know the positive side, the happiness, that where there's, so just to get an idea, so that where there's plenty of crops growing, lot of drinks, food; then, medicines, all those crops they have much protein and they are easy to digest, nothing causes disease. Then, all these conditions become cause of long life. So, that, by living in the vow to not kill, morality.

So we have to, so all these things that we are experiencing in this life, all these good parts that we are experiencing in this life we have to know that it came from our own mind, the positive mind and positive action, living in the morality in the past to not kill, it's the result, we are enjoying the result of our past positive actions, living in the morality to not kill.

Then same thing, that our having, so far, we are able to live long life, that's the result of the past good karma, living in the morality, so all these things. So again having chance in this life to practice morality, to not kill is also comes from the past. So like that, which, again the complete action of the morality to not kill, again one can enjoy the four result happiness from that, in next lives.
