By Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche
Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan (Archive #1604)

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave these teachings during Amitabha and White Tara initiations and a White Tara retreat at Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan, February 18-21, 2007. The teachings include lung  (oral transmission) of the Amitayus mantra and the long-life sutra.

Please note: the teaching was being translated into Chinese and while we have edited those sections out, you may still occasionally hear the Chinese interpreter's voice in the background.

Visualization, Reciting Mantras, Dedications

So maybe I think we finish the meditation now. So I don’t know what there what it comes. So yourself Tara, at the heart there’s eight-spoked wheel, white one, then in the center, with the center. Then there’s three rims, it has three rims. In the center there’s a moon disc, above this there’s syllable TAM, a white TAM. Then around the TAM there’s, so like this, so this is the moon disc here, okay, the eight-spoked white chakra, then that which has three rims and spokes, there’s eight spokes around. So, yeah, at the very center there’s, so this is the moon disc, in the center of that. Then here in the center your own mind in syllable TAM, white TAM. Then, so right in the front, there’s TAM, so right in the front the OM, so then TARE TUTTARE TURE, so that’s scattered on each spoke. The eight, the syllables. Then, MAMA here, this MAMA AYUR PUNI GYANA PUSHTIM KURU SVAHA, SVAHA joins to the OM, next to the OM. So MAMA AYUR, that each syllable on a spoke. Then OM then there’s MAMA AYUR PUNI GYANA PUSHTIM KURU SVAHA.

So then there are three times, inside the rim the vowels, OM A AA I II…ANG SOHA. Then here KA KHA GA GHA…SVAHA. No, sorry, I made a mistake. The vowels is anticlockwise, okay. For the blessing the speech, I think the vowel is clockwise and the consonants anticlockwise. Then OM YE DHARMA…, heart of the dependent arising, that mantra is clockwise. So but here in the text, in this text, I don’t know what the text it says but here vowels is anticlockwise and consonants are clockwise. That must be same the heart of dependent arising mantra clockwise.

So, yeah, all the syllables, syllable TAM and all the syllables, everything, in the nature of light, nature of beams, and it has like in the morning the plants when you look at, there’s water dew, in the morning, full of water dew, like that, all this nectar, nectar dripping, like nectar dew. Okay, so that, _______ need to clarify that, so then that’s it. The rest is, I’m not going to go over because it will take time, so I think it’s in the meditation prayer there what’s translated.

So, yeah, so in the ball of the TAM there’s His Holiness the Dalai Lama, gurus, then there’s Sanghas down below, then you visualize all the, yeah, I mentioned before, all sentient beings, then purify, mentioned at the beginning. Then after that I mentioned, with nectar, sickness, spirit harms, negative karma, all the defilements purified. Then after that, then the body filled with the long-life nectar, how many gurus, Sanghas, like that, and the other, your own families and any specific person that you want to do long-life prayer for, want to have long life, those who have cancer or somebody with life obstacles, can visualize those. Even not in the ball then you can visualize maybe down below on the moon disc, can do that, if it’s more comfortable. Then all those who are doing, who recite OM MANI PADME HUM, making their life meaningful from that, collecting extensive merit, ?become ?purification, those, then all those holy beings, morality, making their life meaningful, and then doing something good, anyone who does good for others, they all received the immortal nectar, completely filled up, then increased the life, fortune, merit, wisdom, realization. Then with this meditation then chant the mantra.

The rest’s in the meditation book that translated, so I’m not going to go through, otherwise it will take a lot of time. So that’s it. [pause]

There it says, I saw the mantra that OM AYUR PUNYA GYANA PUSHTIM, it says TIM, right, in the book, TIM? TIM? It says TIM, I have seen TIM. Normally we recite AYUR PUNYA GYANA PUSHTING, PUSHTING KURU SOHA. Huh?

PUSHTING or TIM? Huh? PUSHTIM? TIM or TING?

TIM. I mean, I haven’t studied Sanskrit, so I can’t really judge a hundred percent this and that, so normally how we, I mean normal recitation is PUSHTING, but then the translation I saw that, I don’t know whether the lama translated that or the person from International Office did that, I’m not sure, PUSHTIM, because I think it ?was ?revised, so I’m not sure. So usually we recite PUSHTING KURU SOHA, PUSHTING KURU SVAHA.

Yeah, so okay, so that’s it. We do this meditation then it’s finished.

Then this, I want to mention, there’s achieving the pacifying attainment, achieving the increasing attainment, achieving the controlling attainment, achieving the wrathful attainment. There are different colors, those lights, okay, the beams. The last one, after the green, which does all the activities, okay, then come out, fill up your whole body then come out and then the outside green, after the blue, then, green ?tent, complete circle, top, complete circle. Then think achieved, accomplished all the activities, infinite activities, completed.

Then after that, there is says “brown,” but I think, here I think, my guess is, the end of the rainbow, the last, the very end, the rainbow the very last this one color, this one? What’s the name of that color?

What? The very last, there’s rainbow like this, the last color? It’s not red. But….

What’s indigo?

I don’t know what indigo is. So…

Something like that, little bit darker but the flower?

That ?ribbon that ?tied. Something, here, something like this here.

Something like that. This one’s better. Yeah, something like that, on the edge.

Yeah, that’s right. I think it belongs to that but it’s…. This one? Yeah, that’s right. Okay, so now you got the idea. So anyway, it says “brown,” that’s not correct. I don’t think, I’m not sure how the original translation by the lama, ?Lota Rinpoche, he’s very good lama, he’s very good. I’m not sure whether he translated that or, I don’t think so, he’s good knowledge. I don’t know, maybe from the one who did revision, I’m not sure.

So that color. What do you say?

Violet. But violet and purple are the same?

Pinkish? Not pink. Not pink but I think maybe a little bit darker than pink, I think. I think maybe violet, I think. Violet. Anyway, end of the rainbow, come out and then, first fill up your whole body then stabilized all the actions, all the attainments, power all the actions, attainments, that stabilized, okay. That which you have already attained before, then it is stabilized. Then it came out of all this, the tent of the beams, [pause] so the white then yellow, then controlling, the red, then blue, wrathful, then green one, all the activities, yeah filled up then achieved control over achieving all the infinite actions, then came out then become tent, outside blue, then you think achieved all infinite activities. Then the velvet, so, like the end of the rainbow the violet color emitted then filled the whole body then think stabilized all the actions, all the attainments you have achieved. Then went outside the green tent and completely circled by that, then all this stabilized, the tent, the different beams tent, different-colored beam tent. Then all the six beam tent, house or tent, tent-house, all the six tent beams, tent-house of light, all then become one, like egg shape, one piece, all become one piece, extremely hard and even end of the world wind cannot destroy and between each tent is all filled with beautiful blue utpali flower, just opened, fresh. What’s the word you use? Soft, yeah, that’s right. Yeah, yeah.

Anyway, so that’s it. So now no more explanation. Finished. No more blah, blah, blah. All the blah, blah’s gone, finished.

So you can do that, you can read the prayer.

So, there’s three rims, eight-spoked wheel and three rims and center moon, then there’s OM in front, then, so there’s eight spokes, so it might be on this, TARE TUTTARE TURE, then MAMA AYUR PUNYI GYANA PUSHTING KURU, there’s no YE, PUSHTING KURU, OM TARE TUTTARE TURE, then MAMA AYUR PUNYI GYANA PUSHTING KURU SVAHA. So in the text it says there, the TARE TUTTARE TURE is outside, then between the OM at the beginning and the very last syllable HA, then you have other, the supplementary or the extra, other than TARE TUTTARE TURE, the other, supplementary? How do you say? So those around, between the OM and the HA?

Huh? Doesn’t it describe that? It should be there.

Doesn’t it say OM? Just TARE TUTTARE TURE?

On the moon disc?

SOHA? Just SO without HA? Yeah, that’s right. I think it should be like that, then it’s eight. Then there’s eight. So then that means each syllable on the spoke. Then outside there are three rims, on the spokes the three times, the vowels and consonants and then heart. So the OM and the HA on the moon disc. OM facing to the TAM. Then on the edge there’s beginning of the spokes, so the eight syllables there, then MAMA AYUR PUNYI GYANA PUSHTING KURU, so it becomes separated the letter, it usually comes together, SVAHA. [pause]

So maybe like that. HA joined to the OM, then TARE TUTTARE TURE, MAMA AYUR PUNYI GYANA PUSHTING KURU, maybe SO goes outside, then HA with OM. If that one says like that, maybe it’s, usually as far, ?recites together, then in this way then there are eight spokes, then each syllable goes on a spoke, when the spoke comes, each one on that, so then it becomes eight syllables, so it fits with the eight spokes. So then that means the other, SOHA, then HA has to come to the OM. So might be like that, but anyway needs to be checked. But anyway meantime can meditate like that. Then anyway to make sure, have to check whether it’s like that. Meantime can visualize like this. Basically then have to check whether that’s exactly like that or not.

So that’s it. Then we do the prayer.

Kyabje Chöden Rinpoche explained at Vajrapani that when you do the recitation of mantra, was instruction how to recite mantra, the way of reciting mantra. So if you do too fast then it becomes incorrect, for example, Rinpoche uses for example here if you recite OM A AA I II… [Rinpoche recites very quickly] then doesn’t become correct because you lose the sound, for example, OM A AA I II U UU RI RI LI LI E AI O AU ANG AH [Rinpoche recites slowly and clearly], so you lose the sound, so that becomes incorrect, doesn’t come out like A AA, the second one is a longer tune, so that doesn’t come out so it becomes incorrect, so Rinpoche used that as an example, if you do, if one recite the mantra too fast, the way of reciting mantra, when you do a deity’s retreat or, however, mantra. So need to specify exactly the sound, the differences. You have to make difference, so second one is longer tune, A A-A I I-I U U-U. So normally we have to think about, we have to concentrate, we have to remember that.

Okay, so do the rest. Read.

So there’s one thing to be specified. OM YE DHARMA HETU PRABHAVA…YO, then stop there, NI…. This is how to do it. So it is also explained in the, there’s one book by ?Pamang Lotsawa, who wrote how to read the mantras, the Sanskrit mantas, he also explained there. So if you joined YO NIRODHA, if you recite that NIRODHA, if you recite those two words together, NIRODHA, then it’s like, what it becomes the language, the Sanskrit, stop the female organ, so if you just go NIRODHA, like this, so then it becomes different meaning, so that’s why you have to stop, NI then stop there, RODHA…SVAHA, like that. So that’s explained ?Pamang Lotsawa how to read the mantra in that book and, I think, Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche also explained, I think. Also Geshe Ngawang Drakpa mentioned that too. So because he memorized by heart the ?Pamang Lotsawa’s the small book, how to read the mantras, Geshe-la has memorized all that by heart. So because memorized well, by heart, so I think he has quite a stable mind, memory, so he can remember.

OM YE DHARMA…YO NI, then RODHA…SVAHA.

Okay, go on.

No, maybe translate.

Yeah, you have break, NI, then you separate, YO NI, YO, huh?

YONI RODHA…. After NI, then RODHA. Break up, oh, no, no. Sorry, I made a mistake. Sorry. That’s right, I think. Mistake. That’s right.

Ah, between YO and NI, break?

Oh, yes, yes. That’s right. Sorry, I forgot, you see. So not between NI and RO, between YO and NI, break, have break there, between that. Between YO and NI, that’s right. Break. The one I mentioned before was mistaken. So between YO and NI, break. So if you put together then it means female organ, like that.

So that’s, thanks for Sarah to reminding. I forgot, where to break. Good, okay. Yeah, read.

Wait. So do the meditation which I explained this morning, from the HRIH then beams like hooks come then that part, I’m not going, meditation, life which has been scattered, taken away, degenerated by the different spirits, so then hooked the vase filled with nectar, long-life nectar in the skulls, all those forms, and then the five elements and all the wisdom, power and wealth and all those and the wheel-turning king, the deva India and so forth, the great pandits all their great wisdom and yogis’ attainments, all that, and blessings of all the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, buddhas, bodhisattvas, so then in the form of nectar, like that, absorbed in the vase, Buddha Amitayus’s vase, then from there flowed down and entered in yourself through the crown, yourself Tara, filled the whole body, then absorbed to the heart the syllables, those mantras which are on the wheel, then absorbed to that then nectar came from that then filled the whole body. Can think that.

However, and completely filled His Holiness’s holy body with the immortal nectar, then all the gurus, then Sanghas, then all the Sanghas in this organization, then rest you can visualize down below ?near the moon disc, if you ?can’t do up there, ?underneath. So all those three different things which I mentioned before, your own families there and then, so first thing is purify all the sicknesses, spirit harms, negative karmas and defilements, everything of the sentient beings, purified. After that then that they’re all, the three, those who chant OM MANI PADME HUM, those who live in morality, those who do good things for others, then in all their hearts they received immortal nectar and increased their life, fortune, wisdom, realizations, everything. Then all the organizers in the organization, in the FPMT organization, all the organizers and all the supporters and all those who, so many of those who sacrifice their life to the organization doing service to others, so they all receive the nectar, immortal nectar and increase all these four things, increase life, merit, wisdom, realization, all that.

Then think, any student who has life obstacle, like cancers, who has life obstacle, like the ex-director of the Taichung center, what’s her name? Mrs Li? Li Ti Shen. So, he’s in the last stage of cancer, so think of that. Then whole his body, purified everything, disease, spirit harm, negative karma, defilements, then completely filled with the immortal nectar, his body. Then this increases everything, all those life. Then also in Singapore there’s an old student who has been dedicating, helped for so many years, he looked after the fund that we offer food to Sera Je Monastery, not now but before, many years he looked after that, and then he do many other service to the organization, so he has cancer. So purify all these things, then nectar, his whole body filled with nectar, immortal nectar then increased all those, life, fortune, wisdom, realizations. So then any other people, any other students, so happened the same thing, so we do the meditation ?that ?way.

So we chant some mantra.

[Rinpoche recites the White Tara mantra.]

[Rinpoche recites the White Tara mantra for about twenty minutes.]

Then now think everybody become harmonious. So nectar coming, purified, then everybody, not only increased life, fortune, all the things, all the qualities, those who don’t talk to each other, they all become harmonious, talking each other. Enjoying, so happy to talk to each other.

?Though they’re all having Valentine’s Day.

So this, to do, this has a longer version, but there’s very short one which I did this morning, but however, to visualize those people who have cancer, life obstacles, like people in the organization, so that’s very good to think of them and purify them and then their body filled up with the immortal nectar and increased life, fortune, wisdom, realizations, so that can help, can help, so to meditate like that to help them is very good.

Yeah, finish. After this we do protector prayers. After we do this we do protector prayers, okay?

[Ven. Sophia continues the practice with recitation of Padmasattva mantra, until interrupted by Rinpoche.] OM A AA I II…, did you do that? Now you do very loudly. Very strong one, very loud. [Ven. Sophia recites the Sanskrit vowels very loudly three times. When she says E I, Rinpoche corrects her.] E AI, E AI. Don’t put the I there.

Don’t bring I into the mantras.

[Ven. Sophia completes the third recitation.]

There’s enough time to mention the I in the rest of the day, so don’t put I into the mantra.

Yeah, go on. Next one.

[Ven. Sophia starts to recite the Sanskrit consonants.]

In Sanskrit it’s, in Tibetan we say DZA but in Sanskrit they recite JA, but then here there’s a little bit of a question. Here, in Tibetan recite DZA then CHA recite, seems like that. However, in Tibetan the CHA and DZA different, it’s not the same letter. So usually there’s no CA CHA JA JHA NYA, in Tibetan there’s KA KHA GA GHA NGA, DZA DZHA CHA CHHA NYA… With Tibetan it’s a little bit different. CHA is a separate letter, CA CHA JA JHA NYA doesn’t come out here.

In Sanskrit it’s recited JA, in Tibetan DZA, but that needs to be checked, because in Tibetan there’s a CHA, separate letter from DZA.

Yeah, read one more. Don’t be shy.

[Ven. Sophia tries to recite but dissolves into laughter. She then asks Geshe-la to recite it.]

[Ven. Sophia: I put Geshe-la in, not I, Geshe-la.]

No, KA KHA, you said, KA KA. No, if you do that part it’s okay. Finish.

[Ven. Sophia: Rinpoche, I can’t read the translation from, so because we do….]

[Ven. Sarah: The English is very bad.]

Alle, okay.

[Ven. Sarah: They took it from the English.]

Oh, okay. Oh, I see. KA KHA GA GHA NGA, CA CHA DZA DZHA NYA, TA THA DA DHA NA, TA THA DA DHA NA…HUNG HUNG PHAT.

[Ven. Sophia: I think Geshe-la will pronounce more correctly. Maybe he can show us.]

Then next one, OM YE DHARMA….

[Ven. Sophia recites the heart of dependent arising mantra.]

So you didn’t stop. So YO, then NI.

[Ven. Sophia: YO NIRODHA… Sorry. OM…YO NIRODHA…SVAHA]

Excellent. Excellent.

[Ven. Sophia: Rinpoche, the long-life Amitayus mantra?]

Yeah, you have, already recited.

[Ven. Sophia recites the Amitayus mantra.]

Everybody has? Everybody has a copy?

[Ven. Sophia: No.]

Which one? That’s the common one or the one that, the long….?

[Ven. Sophia: The common one.]

The others don’t have a copy of that? If others have copy then read together.

[Discussion among students in Chinese.] Okay, I read this, that one has so many benefits, I read that then you repeat together. [Rinpoche leads the students in recitation of the long Amitayus mantra.] Then the last prayer. So I explained the benefits of this the other night but I didn’t get to explain. So the mantra, it’s in English in the computer already, so I’m not sure in Chinese or not. But that can be made copy and then everybody can, anyone who like they can get copies. So because it’s so powerful, it has unbelievable, inconceivable benefit. So to chant for yourself and to chant for others, okay?

Is there protector prayer? Okay.

So we bless, while you are White Tara so then you can bless the torma and tea offerings at the beginning, then this way through the prayers, because it talks about torma offering, tea, so I think it’s easy to offer like that. It’s available there to, as it comes in the prayer, torma offering, tea offering, so then you can offer, so it makes easy. If it’s at the end then when you’re doing prayer there’s nothing there to offer sort of.

So the torma, to make, there’s fruits behind so we can ?use as torma.

[Rinpoche starts to bless the tormas.]

So, purified the torma and dispelled interferers, purified in emptiness the tormas. Think that, meditate on that. Then the syllable BHRUM, ?wisdom understanding emptiness then that manifested into a syllable BHRUM then transformed into an extended jewel container then the syllable OM then became uncontaminated nectar, oceans of uncontaminated nectar, like that, torma. Then after that we bless the tea offering [a few words missed.] So that’s the torma.

[Rinpoche continues in Tibetan: Praise to Six-Arm Mahakala and rest of protector prayers, including Namthotse, Palden Lhamo.]

So if you have Four-Arm Mahakala then you recite that.

[Recitation of Nagarjuna’s praise in Chinese.]

The Hayagriva, the torma offering.

[Hayagriva prayers]

The tea offering.

[Rinpoche blesses the tea offering, then the group recites the tea offering prayers.]

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, the three-time merits collected by others, may the bodhicitta be actualized within one’s own heart, in the hearts of one’s own family members, in the hearts of all the students in this organization and then all the organizers, all the supporters, benefactors, and so many of those who sacrifice their life, so also here in Taiwan, so many of those who are, then being director or however, whoever are doing service, sacrificing their life, doing many different service for the organization to serve sentient beings and the teaching of Buddha through this organization. So those and anyone, those who rely upon me, whom I have promised to pray, whose name is given to me, doing service to me, in all their hearts, bodhicitta to be generated and in the hearts of all the rest of the sentient beings without delay even a second.

Jang chhub sem chog….

May the bodhicitta, especially may the bodhicitta be generated in the hearts of all the leaders of this world, without delay even a second.

Jang chhub sem chog….

Then especially may the bodhicitta be generated in the hearts of all those people who have harmful thoughts to harm the world, to other sentient beings, bodhicitta to be generated in the hearts of all the Muslim people and as well as any others who have harmful thoughts to harm others, so bodhicitta to be generated, may the bodhicitta be generated in all their hearts without delay even a second.

Due to all these three-time merits collected by oneself, collected by others. As well as in the hearts of the top officials in mainland China, in their hearts.
