In this book, Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains the importance of the spiritual teacher and advises how to train the mind in guru devotion, the root of the path to enlightenment. Edited by LYWA senior editor, Ven. Ailsa Cameron, this is a fantastic teaching on guru devotion and is a great and very important book.

24. Dedications

Dedication prayers related to the guru are very important in our everyday life because they create the cause for us to be successful in this life and all future ones until we achieve enlightenment. Without obstacles and without taking much time, we can achieve the path to enlightenment. I often dedicate merit with various dedication prayers related to the guru. Since guru devotion is the most important practice, we should always pray and dedicate merit to be able to correctly devote ourselves to the virtuous friend. Dedicating merit to be able to fulfill the guru’s holy wishes creates the cause to be able to carry out whatever advice we are given. We should also dedicate our merit for the long life of our gurus.

Due to all the merits of the three times accumulated by me and by all the buddhas, bodhisattvas and all other beings, may I, my family and all other sentient beings be able to meet perfectly qualified Mahayana virtuous friends in all our future lifetimes. From our side may we always see them only as enlightened beings and do actions of body, speech and mind that only please their holy minds. May I be able to fulfill all their holy wishes by myself alone.

Due to all the merits of the three times accumulated by me and by all other beings, in all our lifetimes may we never give rise for even a second to anger or heresy toward the virtuous friend; may we see all their actions as pure. Through this devotion, may we receive the guru’s blessings in our hearts.

Please grant blessings for me and all other sentient beings to realize that attaining the common and sublime realizations depends on correctly devoting ourselves to the virtuous friend. From now until enlightenment, giving up our own bodies and lives, may we do actions only pleasing to the virtuous friend.

May my body, speech and mind be only pleasing to my gurus. May I never displease them for even a second.

May the lives of the glorious gurus be long and stable and may all their holy wishes be accomplished immediately.

Due to all the merits of the three times collected by me and by others, in all lifetimes may I belong to a good family, have clear wisdom, be free of pride, have great compassion, have respect for my gurus and live in the samaya of the guru.130

From this moment until my enlightenment, please grant me blessings to follow with devotion, in thought and action, the spiritual friend, who is the source of all goodness. By acquainting my mind with the path that pleases the buddhas, may I attain the peerless state of enlightenment.

Please grant blessings for my body to be inseparable from you the father’s holy body, my speech to be inseparable from you the father’s holy speech and my mind to be inseparable from you the father’s holy mind.

May I become just like you.
