Severe Pain in Body and Life Obstacles

A student wrote that for the past two months they'd had a lot of pain in the body and felt weak and lethargic, with severe back pain, fever and chills. Rinpoche advised these practices.

My most dear one,
We have similar pain, but I think yours is much heavier. I’m sorry about that. Maybe I should take all your pain and make you levitate on dharmakaya. What about that?

I checked and yes, you have life obstacles. You need to take the long-life initiation quickly.

  • The Mantra Promised by Tara: I will recite this five times for you.
  • Amitayus Long Life Sutra: To be read two thousand times by Kopan Monastery.
  • Sung Chen (great mantra): I need to read this for you five times. So, I will do this now.
  • Vajra Cutter Sutra: The Sangha in Aptos are reciting this once for you.
  • You need to take a total of three ratna samphel precious pills. Take one early tomorrow morning with warm water. Do not expose it to the light; that’s why it is wrapped. Bite into it and crush in your mouth and drink it with warm water. You need to take this pill three times, so after three days take another one, and then again after three more days take one more. Take three pills in total.
  • Take one gurchung precious pill each day for five days, so five pills in total.

A student wrote to ask Rinpoche about life obstacles. Rinpoche checked and advised these practices.

  • Liberate 180 animals
  • Gya tong ba [8,000 verse Prajnaparamita]: to be recited at Samten Ling Monastery
  • Mamo trü kang: to be recited by the Lama Gyupas at Kopan Monastery

A student wrote to Rinpoche about her health. She was sixty years old and according to Chinese astrology it was an obstacle year.

My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,

I checked and there is no danger to your life this year.

You should read the Golden Light Sutra four times.

The Four Mandala Offerings to Chittamani Tara puja needs to be done twice, for your health and for your Dharma practice, to be free from samsara and to achieve enlightenment.

Prajnaparamita for Health and Life Obstacles

Rinpoche gave this advice to a student who wrote to ask about life obstacles.

The Prajnaparamita needs to be recited five times for you. This comes out as very, very beneficial for you; for your health and your life this comes out best.

This should be done by the Kopan nuns. Explain the dedication, for your long life and for the removal of health obstacles. You can discuss with them the offerings and so forth.

A student wrote that some other lamas had said there were life obstacles. The student asked Rinpoche for practice advice.

My dear one,
Your life seems good in my observation. Maybe you did some things, such as circumambulation and prostrations, which could have purified the obstacles. That is possible. So, at the moment it came out good—not best, but good.

If you can, read the Amitayus Long Life Sutra two hundred times.

Also, if you can, do White Tara long life practice in the mornings. You can just recite one mala of the mantra. Use the short White Tara sadhana by Pabongka Rinpoche.

Prajnaparamita Recitation

A student with life obstacles wrote to Rinpoche, who advised recitation of the Prajnaparamita to remove the obstacles.

My dear one,
The life obstacles that you have require some purification. The Prajnaparamita, the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras of the Buddha, must be recited to remove these obstacles. 

The Prajnaparamita needs to be recited five times in total: three times by the Kopan nuns and twice by the Tsum nuns.

The Prajnaparamita is the very heart to all the Buddha’s teachings on wisdom and is the direct antidote to our ignorance.
